Whether you’re tackling small business SEO or marketing techniques on a much larger scale, your online presence is significantly important when it comes to driving new business and promoting your services. You may think that a good website is all you need to have a functional online presence, but when it comes to SEO tools, you need a lot more than just a website, and there are many categories needing to be enhanced.

Below are some practical SEO tips to help you get the best out of your business.

Optimise Your Keywords

A practical starting point is to have one focused keyword or phrase which you believe best incorporates your business. You further need to create a list of potential keywords, and also have a focus keyword for whatever piece of content you are producing. If you a producing a blog in the hope of promoting a particular area of your business, you need to ensure you choose the focus keyword for that unique blog and incorporate it however you can. Writing a general blog for your website without promoting keywords and links won’t be enough, regardless of whether it’s good content or not.

It’s important to tailor keywords and phrases to how you think a potential customer would use their wording in a search engine query box. For example, “cake shops in London.” Try and tailor your content wording towards query wording.

Put Your Focus Keyword Everywhere You Can

This means putting the keyword in the title of the page you’re creating. It also means putting in on the homepage of your website, in the description of images, in the headers of pages and the name of images you save. Also, it’s important to include the keyword phrase in a creative and enticing title – don’t just use the keyword phrase as your sole title, but instead find a good way to fit it in which sounds natural.

Try Link Building

This is crucial in building a trustworthy reputation for your business and its website. Google will pay more attention to those businesses that have links on many other websites, not just their own. You can create amazing content for your own website, which promotes your skills, but anybody can write that about themselves, and it may not be reliable without proof.

With link building, you ensure that your website and business gets a mention on other website pages. This could be through an external review of your services, or perhaps a guest blog post which you have written to appear on a different site.

This process involves a good amount of networking and reaching out to other website owners for help. This may sound like a long-winded process, but it’s valuable, and it will make all the difference if you can get those external links. It may be a case of sending an email to certain contacts and asking how your services can best be mentioned on their website.

Research the Competition

With any business comes the unfortunate truth that you’re going to have competition, and it’s crucial to stay ahead of the game – that’s what good SEO is all about. In order to stay ahead of the game, however, you need to know what your competitors are doing, and ensure you’re doing the same – and more.

Make a habit of analysing your competitor’s website. What have they done differently to yours? How successful has it been? What posts are they making, and how regularly? What position in a Google search are they coming in at for a particular keyword? How have they incorporated this keyword?

If you don’t know who your competition is, then do a general Google search for your type of business or your focused keyword. The results which appear on the first page or above your business result are your competition. From here, you can head to their website and see exactly what they’re doing and how they’re doing it.

Write Amazing Content

Uploading basic content to your website just to get the keywords up there simply isn’t enough. Your content needs to be really good. Read your competition’s content, and make it 100 times better. This doesn’t only apply to blogs or news content, but any content whatsoever on your website. Your homepage needs to be functional and interesting, and every page needs to be written with flair.

If you’re not familiar or comfortable with creating good content, or writing isn’t your forte, there is no shame in asking for help – in fact, it’s encouraged. You can hire professional content writers or employ someone within your team to take care of the marketing content for you. Especially if you are small business owner, it’s vital that you delegate important tasks like this to someone more experienced if you have enough responsibility as it is.
