Do you have an eCommerce website that is just not getting the traffic you’d hoped for? Perhaps you’ve spent a fortune on creating lots of content for social media and you’ve just not seen the eCommerce sales and return on the investment you’ve put into it?

We hear this time and time again from our customers. They want to know how to increase e-commerce sales conversion and do so successfully the first time around.

Before you consider throwing the towel in and giving up on your eCommerce business altogether, why not have a chat with us to see what we can do to boost the SEO for your eCommerce website? SEO is the secret sauce of many popular eCommerce sites, especially those who are smaller and can’t rely on a big industry name.

What Is eCommerce SEO?

eCommerce SEO is the same as regular SEO, in that we use specialist techniques to boost your visibility and rankings on the search engine results page (SERP). Mainly focused on your Google results, because what works for Google will improve results on most other search engines too, taking a deep dive into your SEO with an eCommerce SEO audit will do wonders for your website and really show you ways to increase eCommerce sales.

How to Improve Organic Search Results

To answer that question, we must first answer, what is organic search? Any traffic you gain without spending money is considered an organic search result. In this article, we’ll focus on the four main areas of improvements to give you an insight into how to grow your organic search results yourself and give you some benefits of eCommerce SEO and SEO tips for eCommerce sites along the way.

The four main areas we’ll be looking at are:

  • On-page SEO
  • Blog content and Link building
  • Google shopping

Ready to improve your website’s eCommerce SEO? Let’s get started.

On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is arguably the most important of all of the improvements, which is why we’re discussing it first. On-page SEO broadly means anything on your eCommerce website design that you have control over.

When a user lands on your website, you want them to stay as long as possible. There are many ranking factors that Google and other search engines use to decide if your content is useful, but the two that make the most difference here are the bounce rate and pogo-sticking.

The bounce rate is how long your user spent on your site. Did they land on your page and then disappear three seconds later? Or did they hang around and visit a number of different pages? Ideally, you want them to do the latter.

Pogo sticking is the term used to describe a user coming onto your site from a search and then leaving, returning to the SERP, and going to another page. For example, if they asked “how to help nail polish dry quickly” and landed on your page that doesn’t really answer the question but does try to sell them different colours, that wouldn’t be helpful, and they would likely leave quite quickly for another page that might answer the question.

The key with on-page SEO is to make your website as useful and easy to navigate as possible, boosting eCommerce online sales.

You can do this by using helpful blog content and good site architecture, an easy to use navigation system, and lots of relevant internal linking. By improving all of these areas, you’ll reduce the pogo-sticking and the bounce rate and show Google your site is helpful, easy to use, and gives the user what they wanted.

Blogs and Link Building

We discussed blogs briefly above, but here we’re going to go into more detail. In short: you need to be blogging on your site to improve SEO.

By blogging, we don’t mean a Livejournal-Esq daily diary, but helpful user content that will bring them to your website.

Users use search engines less to search for ‘things’ and more to search for ‘answers’. Google even advertises itself less like a search engine and more as an answering machine, so it makes sense to capitalise on this.

Create blog posts that answer questions and queries and gives really useful information for your users whilst recommending your products and boosting your internal linking. This will drive traffic and drive eCommerce sales.

For example, if you were selling pet supplies, you may write a blog entitled “How To Help Your Dog Be More Visible In The Dark”, this is a great topic, especially for the shorter daylight hours. Your users can get some good information on safety while being recommended products such as light-up collars, leads, harnesses, torches, etc.

Good blog content will naturally build links, but it’s important to go out and build links too. For more information on link building, give us a call, and we’ll be happy to help.

Google Shopping

Google shopping is an area where many sites seem to falter, and it’s an excellent way to improve your SEO, so it’s worth doing!

There are a few different ways to boost your Google Shopping visibility, but again, this is very much based on what is helpful to the user. If your pet shop is UK based, then let Google know, so it doesn’t show your products to European searchers. Equally, if you do set up the tags and location data properly, this can be one of the fastest and simplest ways to get in front of users.

Use great images, preferably different to your competition but still high quality, and good descriptions to really jump out and show your users that your website is different.

Summing Up

SEO is an important factor in many eCommerce businesses, but it doesn’t happen overnight, and it can be very technical. We hope that this article has given you some insight into why SEO is important for eCommerce.
