Appealing to and staying within Google’s specific guidelines to rank higher on search results pages is the goal of many website owners. The problem is that Google changes its guidelines regularly, so it’s easy to fall behind if you do not stay in the know.

One of the more recent changes is the Google spam update. This update was published in Google’s search quality raters guidelines, with the changes particularly addressing AI-generated content.

About Google’s New Spam Focus on Raters Guidelines

Google’s search quality rater guidelines were changed in December 2024 as part of the core update. It was no great surprise that Google decided to update its guidelines, considering the rise of AI, which often leads to poorly written content that users don’t necessarily find helpful.

It is important to keep in mind that some of these guidelines do not directly affect search engine rankings. Instead, they are guidelines that Google’s quality raters use when assessing the quality of search engine results, and this feedback then impacts future algorithms. Google also has machine learning tools to help identify spammy content.

What Changed?

Some of the main changes from the Google spam update include:

Addressing AI-Generated Content: The update has provided a clear definition of AI-generated content, highlighting that it is any content created by a type of machine learning model. It also goes into how to identify AI content, such as specific language to look out for.

Exposed Domain Abuse: Expired domain abuse refers to the process of purchasing an expired domain name to benefit the website without providing genuinely valuable content.

Cloaking: This is where a website displays one version of the content, only for the page itself to feature different content. It’s used by website owners to rank higher but is very misleading and, therefore, spammy.

Link Spam: This is where a website acquires too many backlinks in an effort to rank higher. Google does not want you to buy links, as this is seen as a way of manipulating rankings.

Scaled Content Abuse: This is a tactic in which website owners create too many website pages with content to rank higher without actually helping the users who click on the page.

How to Align Your Content to Meet Google’s Raters Guidelines

Knowing that Google has updated its raters guidelines, how do you use that information for your SEO and content strategy?

Do Not Rely on AI

The first step is the most obvious: avoid using AI to generate all your website’s content. While AI is undoubtedly exciting, it does not yet create content that can match humans, and it’s often pretty obvious when an image or piece of written work has been created by artificial intelligence. It is tempting to use AI to fill in the blanks on your site, especially when trying to rank higher, but avoid this, as it could mean your website gets penalised down the line. Instead, consider using Blog Writing Services.

Avoid Overstuffing with Keywords

One of the Google ranking signals looks specifically at the language used. Too many keywords stuffed into a written piece of content will stick out like a sore thumb, making your piece look anything but organic and naturally written – not to mention not actually helpful for the reader. For a smaller blog post – say, anything under 1000 words – aim for one single primary keyword and a couple of secondary keywords to help you rank higher while ensuring the content is not overstuffed. There are handy tools available to give you a clear look at keyword density in a piece; anything over 2% should be avoided. It’s a good idea to keep up with keyword research, too, so you know which keywords will help you rank the best. If you experience a drop in keyword rankings, that may be due to an issue with the quality of content.

Follow E-E-A-T

Google uses the acronym E-E-A-T to check a website’s quality. This stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Make sure all your content aligns with these. For example, always include sources to establish trustworthiness. You can also provide some of your own unique insights to boost experience and expertise.

Write for Humans, Not Search Engines

One big mistake many website owners make is trying to create content that appeals more to search engines. While this may seem like a good idea to rank higher, it is a huge misstep, as Google wants to rank genuinely helpful content! When crafting content for your SEO strategy, always think about the reader first.

Steer Clear of Black Hat SEO

Many website owners want to cut corners with their SEO content strategy. This can lead to some pretty poor decisions, though. Overall, you must avoid using black hat SEO tactics such as cloaking, as it will lead to your website getting penalised. Instead, focus on white hat or White Label SEO. If you want to boost SEO with minimal effort, it’s better to choose good Content Writing Services.

All of these tips will put you on the path of creating helpful, reliable, people-first content, which is what Google wants from you!

Should You Use SEO Management Services?

Following Google’s guidelines is essential, but it can be challenging for website owners to manage. That’s why the idea of using an SEO strategy agency is so popular. So, should you make the most of SEO services?

The answer is yes – SEO consultancy is more than worth factoring into your budget. SEO content writing services are particularly helpful for your Content Strategy, as it means having human writers create high-quality content for your website. Not only that, but the content will feature the right keywords and links, boosting your SEO and bringing in more traffic. Many white label SEO services come with package deals, too; it might include things like blogger outreach services and technical SEO.
