Backlinking is a common practice in the SEO world, but it is not always in our hands. Natural links are of course fantastic to have as they are written by people who are either fans of your work or who see you as a trusted resource in your community. Their link is natural, they automatically direct their audience to you when they insert your link, and it means your content strategy is working.

There are downsides, however. As you have no control over when, where, or how they insert your link into their page, their support can actually hurt your SEO rankings. If their site has been marked as spam or has a low reputation, then Google can actually take this as spam link

It has been a common question among businesses and professionals alike what the correct makeup of an anchor text should be.

The Problem with Blind Link Building

Link building without a strategy, blind link building, or using a shotgun approach to link building all has its flaws. In essence, this type of link building is when you mix up the anchor text and then hope for the best.

Lack of a Cohesive Profile

The first issue with link building in this way is that it lacks cohesion. If you simply guess, then you cannot build a strong strategy in terms of what you want to link for and what you want Google to recognise your page is all about.

Without a strategy in place ahead of time, you run the risk of two things:

  1. Losing a lot of money.
  2. Wasting a lot of time.

Though blind link building, where you simply guess at what your anchor text should be and focus on quantity rather than quality, you are wasting both.

Edging into Black Hat Territory

Blindly work to build up linked without any such strategy, and you run the risk of looking like spam, because, well, you are spam. Building up linked in the wrong way will increase the risk of your page or entire domain boasting a very unnatural backlink profile. What an unnatural backlink profile means for your site is a drop in rankings, as Google penalises such behaviour.

Targeted Approach to Link Building

The opposite of a blind approach is a targeted approach. It works by building up a natural backlink profile and improving the quality of backlinks.

The good news is that this type of link building is actually easier to do once you get the hang of it. You can invest in fewer links, build up a better online reputation, and bring in organic visitors from multiple sources.

How Can You Create a Natural Backlink Profile?

What is a natural backlink profile, and how does it differ from the blind approach you might have been using before?

The best way to know whether the backlink profile for a specific page is natural is to go right to Google. By researching the sites that hold the #1 positions, we can start to see what makes up a high-quality, natural backlink profile.

Anchor Texts and Their Uses

Anchor texts are the words that users can read that is hyperlinked to another webpage. Anchor texts are both controlled by you and entirely out of your hands.

  • For anchor texts on your website, you are in control.
  • For anchor texts on link building content you have created, you are in control.
  • For natural backlinks, you are not in control.

Though it can feel daunting to not have control of specific backlinks

What Are the General Anchor Text Ratio Recommendations?

Google does not want to play nice with web developers and businesses. It wants to change the rules and spice things up regularly so that it can consistently provide the best results, rather than the results from the best SEO strategies.

That is why, even with the best anchor text ratios, you must do your own research for the best results for your industry and the time of your strategy launch.

Today, for example, these might be the top recommendations for your anchor text ratio:

1.    50% Brand Anchors

Brand anchors mean your brand name or your URL. Example: Your Brand or www.yourbrand.com.

2.    25% Topic Anchors

A quarter of your anchor texts should be topic anchors, which refer to the topic you want to rank for. These are best linked to child pages on your site or blog posts. Example: “link building” or “digital marketing.”

3.    15% Miscellaneous Anchors

These anchors refer to “click here”, “learn more” “read more” and so on, they encourage people to visit the page you have linked to.

4.    10% Longtail Anchors

Finally, you have longtail anchors, which are typically a phrase. “What is link building” is a longtail keyword for the topic keyword “link building.”

These are the master keyword categories, and as stated, they are not always the perfect recommendation. To understand this better, it is essential to know the full list of categories anchor texts can fall under:

  1. Brand
  2. Keyword
  3. Page Title or Post Title
  4. Keyword plus one or two non-keyword phrases
  5. The brand plus one or two non-keyword phrases
  6. Partial keyword
  7. Natural, which does not have a reference to the keywords or brand
  8. Full URL (https://www.yourbrand.com)
  9. URL with Capitalisation (YourBrand.com)
  10. URL without http: (www.yourbrand.com)
  11. No text, where the link is from an image.

Link Ratio Recommendations for Home Page

Your home page has different recommendations from other pages or even blog posts.

  • 80% to 95% of your links should be Branded. This means that they should be your Brand name or URL anchor, with the option to include natural keywords to improve the flow of your content.
  • 10% of your links should be Natural Keywords, where you use additional non-keyword phrases on top of the anchor text. For example, if link building is your keyword, a natural keyword or keyword plus would be “link building services” or “link building guide”.
  • 5% of your links should be exact matches of your anchor text, and even then, they should be included in the sentence structure as naturally as possible.

Your homepage is your destination online. It should contain the greatest number of backlinks in comparison to any other page on your site. You should, ideally, have at least twice as many links going to your homepage than your second-highest page.

This is not just because it is the best way to get the main body of your website to the first page. It is one of the critical characteristics of a natural backlink profile.

Link Ratio Recommendations for Other Pages

For any other page on your website, you will have a different anchor text ratio recommendation to follow. As the anchor and content of these pages are typically far more varied than your home, page, the ratios are far more broken up:

  • 50%-60% of your links should be keyword plus or natural keywords, meaning that they contain the keyword you want to rank for as well as natural buffers to make the sentences flow more naturally.
  • 35% – 45% of your links should be branded, meaning they should contain your brand name, URL in some form, or natural keywords including your brand.
  • 10% of links or less should be exact keywords and should either be made into natural keywords if the sentence does not flow.

These pages should contain more natural links and anchor texts, and therefore should be focussed more around the content you want to rank for rather than your website or the brand itself.

Characteristics of a Natural Backlink Profile

To make it simple, we have outlined a list of characteristics that make up a high-quality, natural backlink profile:

Brand Trust

The biggest goal is to build up your brand’s trust with Google. Twice as many backlinks to your home page using primarily brand anchors is an excellent way to start. Having an excellent local SEO strategy that firmly places your brand at a location and as a working business is another significant step to build brand trust.

Diversity of Backlinks

You should aim to have your backlinks on a variety of content and sites. This includes low-ranking personal blogs all the way up to the biggest news sites. These can show up on:

  1. Press Releases
  2. Social Media
  3. Guest Posts
  4. Collaborating Posts
  5. Comment Sections and Forums
  6. And more!

The Right Anchor Text Ratio

Finally, having a good ratio of the right anchor texts is essential for a natural, high-quality backlink profile.

Bonus: Do not be afraid of no-follow links! They are essential to round out your profile and make it look more natural.

Building Your Own Recommended Ratio

Everything online moves at lightning speed, so it is a good idea to understand how to build and create your own anchor text ratio or when you need to revaluate your current ratio in the future. After all, there are three sets of anchor text recommendations on this page alone.

To really succeed, you need to know what the standard is for your industry and for when you are personally improving your link building strategy. The #1 position on Google changes all the time for the same search, and this is because competitors are doing better things to earn their place.By following these steps, you can get the data you need to build your own anchor text ratio.

·         Take Your Target Keyword and Search on Google

To start, simply Google the target keyword you want to rank for and select the top five results for analysis. You can always do more, of course, but five should be a good enough number to devise a great strategy.

·         Analyse the Links

Use your favourite link analysis tool to extract the anchor texts from the website and categorise them into their type. The ratio of these categories will give you a good idea of what anchor text ratio your competitors are using and what ratio got them to the top of Google. Do this for each of the sites you have taken as your sample size to create a better average ratio (after all, the #1 result will have a different SEO strategy in place than #2).

It is a good idea to redo your link analysis every so often to ensure that the strategy you have in place is still working. Google algorithm updates occur daily, and a big enough update can change the recommended link ratio strategy you use on each page.

Hiring the Right Link Building Service

The issue of anchor texts does not end by simply hiring a link building service. You need the right link building company who can build a custom approach and SEO strategy to suit your business. If they also just add blink anchor texts, then you will not get the targeted approach or ever be able to build up a natural backlink profile.
