Is an SEO content strategy something your business is missing? Content centric SEO might be what is preventing your website from climbing the search engine ranks. When your competitors are likely already on board with creating optimised content, it’s not something you can choose to ignore.

What is SEO Content Strategy?

Any business with good SEO management has a content strategy in place. It’s all about creating content with a specific goal in mind – in this case, the goal is to appear higher in search engines. With the right content SEO strategy, you could elevate your business, ensuring your website appears higher in searches and, in turn, boosting chances of leads and sales. Not to mention the brand authority it can provide.

Of course, a worthwhile content strategy for SEO isn’t as simple as writing some content and placing it on your blog. Like any SEO strategy plan, it requires understanding what Google wants from you to achieve tangible results. The good news is we have created a simple content strategy cheat sheet to help you master blog writing and content writing so you can climb the Google ranking!

Identify the Right Keywords

Keyword research is a crucial aspect of any content strategy for SEO, as it is what helps you rank higher on Google. It’s not as simple as throwing a few keywords in – you must identify the keywords in your niche with good search engine traffic potential. There are plenty of online tools to help you manage this, such as Moz and Semrush, helping you discover the best keywords to use in your content. Of course, these keywords should be relevant to the content you’re writing and the products/services you are pushing.

It’s also crucial to understand the potential of the keywords. Sure, a keyword may often be used by users looking for businesses like yours, but how likely are you going to rank for that? If a bunch of high-authority websites already rank high for particular keywords, you might be better off handpicking keywords that are more relevant to your business so that you don’t have to compete as much.

Know Your Target

A good SEO content marketing strategy should always know who the target audience is. You need to know who you’re creating content for, after all! The good news is that, for most businesses, this part is pretty simple, as your target for the content is usually your customer base, who you’ll likely have already identified. Knowing certain aspects of your target audience, such as their age, interests, and occupation, will help you create genuinely enjoyable content that resonates with the right people.

List Topics

To write good content, you must come up with topics that are relevant. Depending on your business, this part can be pretty straightforward – for example, if you’re an eCommerce business selling skincare products, you will likely create content that centres around skincare. In this case, blogs about skincare tips would make far more sense and be more relevant to your target audience than a gardening blog! It’s a good idea to write about various related topics, too, with some of your content going into more detail about particular topics.

Focus On Quality Content

It’s clear that Google wants high-quality content. So, what does that mean? It’s all about creating content that is actually useful and informative. Quality content should be original, relevant, educational, and engaging. It helps to put yourself in your audience’s shoes; that way, you can ensure your content actually answers the right questions. If you do this, you’re also more likely to create authority articles that other websites link to.

Think about length, too. While Google hasn’t told anyone the most favoured number of words for a blog post, generally, it’s best to go over 500 words (and ideally reach 1000). High-quality, long-form content can make a positive difference in your SEO content marketing strategy.

Vary Your Content

When you think of an SEO content marketing strategy, you may first think about blogging. That makes sense, as written content is a big part of it, but you shouldn’t ignore other content forms. For the most engaging SEO for content marketing that appeals to a wider audience, vary your content form, including videos, podcasts, eBooks, audiobooks, and more.

Don’t forget about content on your web pages, too, such as product descriptions. These can help boost your SEO content, as you can include relevant keywords for better ranking.

Routinely Update Content

You may see a ranking decline if your last written blog is from a few years ago. To maintain your ranking, you’ll need to routinely update your content – particularly pieces of content that are outdated. For example, if you have a blog written specifically for 2022, you’ll want to update that for the current year. You might want to update your web copy from time to time, too, especially if your products/services change or to utilise better keywording to rank higher.

Analyse Performance

The best SEO services don’t just update your SEO content; they also keep up with the performance. You don’t want to keep putting out content, only to later realise it’s not doing much for your ranking! It’s helpful to analyse traffic, bounce rate, and visits when doing an SEO strategy, as you’ll be able to see if it’s working. Of course, keep in mind that a good SEO content strategy often takes time to affect your search engine ranking – it’s not something you can change overnight!

SEO Content Marketing Strategy: In Summary

Content marketing and search engine optimisation go hand in hand. While busy with on page SEO, you should also begin a content strategy that boosts your authority and pulls in more traffic. It’s an ongoing process that will bring more visitors over time.
