What is a Good Bounce Rate?

Successful websites are those who are managed by those who are never satisfied with today’s success. They are the ones that keep a website updated, they are the ones that conduct regular audits to ensure the site adheres to Google’s guidelines, and they are the ones that use analytics tools to make informed decisions. One of the most important analytics tools you need to understand to make these informed decisions is the bounce rate.

What is Bounce Rate?

Bounce rate is the percentage of users who leave your website after only visiting one page. All pages and all traffic is used to create your bounce rate, meaning you have to dig deeper to truly understand what your bounce rate means for you. Generally speaking, a high bounce rate is bad for business. Your click-through rates may be high, but if people are immediately leaving your website, then something needs to be changed.bounce rate explained

What is a Good Bounce Rate?

A good bounce rate will depend on your goals. If you have a single-page blog, then a high bounce rate is to be expected, because they are unable to click-through to other areas of your website. However, if you have many web pages on your website, then you need a low bounce rate, meaning people are staying on your website rather than abandoning it.

Before you commit to a full overhaul of your website, however, you should download these reports:

  • The Audience Overview Report, which provides an overview of your whole site.
  • The Channels Report, which provides an in-depth look at the bounce rate from different channels.
  • The All Traffic Report, which provides an in-depth look at the bounce rate for each source.
  • The All Pages Report, which provides an in-depth look at the bounce rate for an individual page.

Only once you have analysed your bounce rate from these perspectives, can you then make the right decisions to better your website?

On-Site Methods to Improve Bounce Rate

When it comes to on-site, you will want to improve the design of your website and the quality of your content. It is important to make sure, for instance, that:

  • There are no broken pathways on your site.
  • It is optimised for both desktop and mobile.
  • Content is interesting, engaging and high-quality.

Advance your website and put more emphasis on content marketing, and you can improve how long a user remains on your site. You can only determine how long someone has visited your site, after all, when they have navigated to different pages on your site, otherwise the duration period will always be 0 seconds.

Off-Site Methods to Improve Bounce Rate

Off-site, you will need to improve your digital marketing efforts. This includes email marketing. Emails and newsletters are often underappreciated in a webmaster’s marketing repertoire, but they can be used to create a unique and bespoke relationship with each and every one of your subscribers. Most notably, email is a great way to share relevant content directly to your users, so long as you use AI and customisation features in order to achieve this.

  • Bespoke emails to your subscribers, offering them VIP deals, customised suggestions based on their preferences, and reminders that are unique to them, like whether the product they loved on your site is now on sale.
  • Create real relationships online with your followers, and send organic traffic to your site where your goal is the soft sale, or to get them to subscribe so that you can continue to grow your relationship with them.
  • Ensure all advertisements you pay for are hyper-relevant. If you don’t, you risk turning away interested parties with your content.

Build up a genuine relationship with your users, and you can share with them information about your website and the content that you produce. The more they know and the more interested they are, the more likely they will be to peruse your site in the future.
