Server log files are any files that are stored on a web server for the purpose of retrieving data requests for webpages. These server logs are created and updated by web servers themselves, such as Microsoft Internet Information Services.
The data included within server log files includes the date and time of a request to access a webpage, the visitor’s IP address, what browser and operating system was used to access the webpage, and other relevant data regarding errors.
Google Analytics and other services can be used to track this data, especially as a forensic tool to understand hacking attempted against a given website or webpage.
