Comment Spam

On-pageSEO

Comment spam is content posted in the comment section of a blog or other forum, left by either malicious bots or blackout advertisers who are attempting to negatively impact a webpage or website. Some spam comments aim to share SEO links for another website, while others are simply attempting to fill up comment sections with irrelevant or inappropriate content.

How do I identify spam?

Spam can be identified by looking at its data. Here’s how a webmaster can spot spam comments:

  • Check the commenter’s name for keywords. If it includes keywords, it’s likely to be spam
  • Check the commenter’s email address using an email checker. If the email address looks suspicious (for instance it seems very random), it is likely to be spam
  • Check any links in the comment. If there are low-quality links, the comment is likely to be spam
  • Check the language of the comments used. If the language does not apply to the content of the post, it is likely spam
