It’s International Women’s Day! As part of our Sustainable Impact Strategy, we wanted to take this opportunity to share the stories of some of our female team members.

One of the focuses for this year is ‘Workplaces Where Women Thrive.’ Click Intelligence aims to have a continually improving culture that empowers women and pushes them forward in their careers. Members from our Content, Operation, and Marketing teams have share challenges they’ve faced in their career and tips for people starting out.

Bex Gawne – Content Manager

Rebecca Gawne

How did you get started with your career?
I graduated with a degree in Creative Writing and always knew I wanted to do something with words. I kind of fell into copywriting when searching for something ‘wordy’ and I immediately loved it! As reading is my most loved pastime, moving into copyediting was very natural and a few years later, I was lucky enough to move up the ladder at Click Intelligence. I now run the Content Team!

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?
One of the biggest challenges to overcome has been learning to trust in my gut instincts – this applies to both being an editor/writer and moving into a management role. It comes down to confidence and experience – when I first moved into a management position, I second guessed everything. Now, I know my intentions for my team are always the best and we have a very open and honest communication style where my team can come to me with everything and anything they want to discuss and they know I will always support and help them.

Do you have any advice for people looking to get into the content field?
Keep learning and keep adding to your experience! Believe in yourself and in your skills but never forget that even the most experienced person always has room to improve. You may not perfectly fit every job ad, but your willingness to learn and grow will take you far. Apply for something that might not fit your experience and you never know where you might end up.

Wendy Manning – Operations Manager

Wendy Manning, Operations Division Manager

How did you get started with your career?
I have past experience in building websites and doing my own basic SEO, and a Management Degree, so when the opportunity presented to work for Click Intelligence I made the step. This was a career change for me. I started in Content Sending and soon moved through the company, working my way up to Operations Manager.

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?
When the sudden promotion to Operations Manager came, due to the post becoming empty, I faced the challenge head-on. It was very daunting at first, but with the support of James and Simon and a great team, I soon fell into the role, giving it my own spin. With any Management position, there are always challenges, but I see them as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Do you have any advice for people looking to get into digital opperations?
When an opportunity opens to you, don’t fear it, embrace it. Our Industry is ever-changing so continual learning is a must, and don’t underestimate your ability.

How did you get started with your career?

Pure luck! I was moving away from the freelance translating path and was looking for a stable full-time job. I was lucky enough to be accepted to Click Intelligence.

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?

Rapid growth, where we had to find solutions to streamline our workflow to get all tasks done on time.

How did you get started with your career?

I finished my degree in Creative Writing and wanted a path that offered stability, the opportunity to write, and the chance to be creative. Marketing came up as a winner!

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?

Sometimes I have moments of imposter syndrome, where I panic I’m not ‘good enough’ for my role or don’t deserve the things I’ve achieved. The more I learn about this, the more I understand how it impacts more people than I realised. Luckily at Click Intelligence, we have a dedicated careers coach who has supported with this.

Do you have any advice for people looking to get into marketing?

Give yourself the opportunity and make sure to throw your hat in the ring! Even if you may not match every aspect on a job description, try! Remember to not sell yourself short. P.S – I always love a C.V that backs up your achievements with data. Include results and numbers to show your skills!

Charlotte Willcocks – Senior Content Editor

Charlotte Guild, Senior Copy Editor

How did you get started with your career?

After studying Creative Writing and Publishing, I knew my passion lay in editing and writing. I loved finding new ways to use words, explore ideas, channel creativity, and make something wonderfully enlightening to a reader, so I wanted to find a career that enabled me to do this daily while providing plenty of stability and experience. As marketing has always interested me, when the opportunity to work in a digital marketing agency came up, I had to apply for the Copy Editor role – it meant I could combine this interest with my love of editing and writing. I am now 4 years into my first digital marketing role, have worked my way up the company to a more senior position, and still loving it!

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?

My confidence has been a huge hurdle to overcome – always thinking, “have I done a good enough job?”, “Can I push myself to speak to a client by myself?”, “Do I have what it takes to train new staff members?” etc. Confidence coaching helped me believe in myself, giving me the confidence to speak with clients, train team members, run the team when Bex is off, and know each day that I have done the best I can. I have overcome challenges like working in a small team during lockdown with busy workloads and learning not to take anything personally in this industry.

Do you have any advice for people looking to get into the content field?

Be open-minded about what one role could do for you and believe in yourself – that self-doubt about not being right for the role or holding enough experience might creep but don’t let it stop you from applying. Just be yourself, and rather than focus on what you can’t bring, show what you can – remember, you can learn and evolve in time. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be the “perfect” candidate – just be you, and you will find a company that is the right fit for you! I would say, however, to always be prepared to try something that challenges you – I’ve pushed myself to write about trading, mortgages, SEO digital marketing practices, and so much more – and all of it has helped me make a great impression and climb the career ladder! You never know how well you will do unless you try it, and it could help you get your foot in the door. You may even uncover a new passion.

How did you get started with your career?

I’ve always wanted a career that involves words, writing, and allows me to be creative. I completed my degree in Journalism and worked as a journalist and editor for several years, where my work was published in national newspapers and magazines. It was when I was in this role that I discovered my passion and skill for editing, which lead to my current role at Click Intelligence, which I love!

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?

Although I am confident in my work, I sometimes experience feelings of self-doubt in my abilities. It helps that the team at Click Intelligence is so supportive to help me overcome these moments. I’ve also been working with our wellbeing coach, which has had a massive impact on my overall confidence and self-belief in the workplace.

Do you have any advice for people looking to get into the content field?

Say yes to opportunities and get your name out there. It’s important to demonstrate any relevant experience that you have and to emphasise the skills that you have that are relevant to the role. If you don’t have any direct experience in the field, think about how your hobbies or interests could support your application. For example, if you run a blog or social media page, the skills you’ve picked up through doing this are transferrable.

Lauren Feather – Content Editor

Lauren Feather, Copy Editor

How did you get started with your career?

While working as a dive instructor in far-flung destinations, I decided to take up freelance content writing and translation on the side to fill my evenings and days off. It wasn’t too long until I found I had a knack for it and thoroughly enjoyed it. One pandemic later, I chose to pursue content writing and editing as a full-time role instead of just a hobby and side gig and have been enthralled with it ever since!

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?

I was a decent writer, but that means nothing in this industry if you’re unfamiliar with SEO and don’t incorporate its best practices into your work. (Cue a many months-long Rocky-style montage of me learning the ins and outs of SEO). That said, I still learn new SEO shenanigans on a daily basis working at Click Intelligence. Imposter syndrome also knocks on my door on the regular, but I tell it I’m not home and to go away.

Do you have any advice for people looking to get into the content field?

Read. A lot. See how others write and find your written voice and personality to make your work truly unique. It also bodes well to take SEO courses and watch YouTube tutorials on SEO alongside developing your writing skills; offering the best of both will catapult you to new heights – as well as make Google fall in love with you.

Rachel Gallen – Content Editor

Rachel Gallen, Copy Editor

How did you get started with your career?
I studied Archaeological Conservation at university. After I did all my training, I went into a job for a company that specialised in archaeological conservation publications and educational courses/training. From here, I found I liked copy editing there and wanted to turn it into a career and was able to find freelance position with Click during pandemic.

What challenges have you overcome on this journey?
It wasn’t what I had been trained in, so family/friends thought it was an odd and rushed decision when I’d been considering it for a while. I always look into courses and so on to fill in my gaps of knowledge. Top tip: Try to not feel stupid asking what seems like obvious questions!

Do you have any advice for people looking to get into the content field?
Give it a go and see what happens! Everyone is always learning and improving. The industry is great for people who want to pick up a little bit of work here or there as well as make full time careers, so you can see if it’s for you without making huge lifestyle changes.

Thank you to our Click Intelligence contributors for taking time out of your busy days to share more about your career journey.
