What is Domain Authority?

What is domain authority in SEO? Simply put, domain authority is one of the most important metrics for your website. Domain authority measures how well your entire web domain will probably rank in the search engine result pages (SERPs).

Though it is used to determine the probability of your site ranking highly on Google and other search engines, it isn’t actually a Google metric. DA is instead a tool provided by third-party companies like Moz and SEMrush, and is one of the most useful tools for measuring your SEO efforts and determining your visibility online. So, if you have ever wondered what is Moz domain authority, and why there seem to be more than one company offering a DA score, this is why.

What is Domain Authority Score?

What is domain authority and why is it important? Domain authority is measured as a score and goes up to 100, though most sites rarely reach either end of the spectrum. The higher your domain authority score (as in, closer to 100), the more trustworthy and reputable your website has been determined to be.

What is the Average Domain Authority?

What is average domain authority? By understanding what the average DA score is for a website, you can benchmark your progress. Working to improve your DA and page authority scores is important, and every increase you make over the average DA can help your website stand out on search engines.

So what is a good domain authority number? On average, most sites have a DA score between 40 to 50.

What is a Good Domain Authority?

What is considered a good domain authority score? A high domain authority is given when websites are considered trustworthy. Typically sites with a high domain authority are fully optimised and have an excellent content marketing strategy in place. They will also have many high-quality sites linking to theirs, and will have trust flowing both on-page and off-page.

So, what is and what is a good domain authority number? Typically anything above DA 50 is considered good, and anything over DA 60 is considered excellent. Though the score goes all the way up to 100, very, very few websites will ever have a score that high. Only the biggest brands, like Facebook, for example, will have a DA score that high up.

  • What is good domain authority? – Any DA Score above 50
  • What is good domain authority score? – Good DA is 50 – 60, Excellent DA is 60+

What Indicators Decide My DA?

There are many factors that will determine your DA score, from your on-page SEO to the quality of your backlinks. All told, there are around 40 indicators, though the most important indicator is by far your backlinks.

Backlinks are incredibly important to your DA because of how Google determines trust amongst websites. PageRank, which is the system used to determine trust, emphasizes high-quality websites, so if you have a backlink to your site on a popular or trusted publisher, this link will offer more benefits than a low-quality link and thus help to increase your domain authority score.

The number of links you accumulate is also important in terms of determining your DA score, so it’s always worth working on your backlinks so that you can steadily increase this number over time. Don’t make quantity the main focus of your endevours, though, as having too many links from low-quality or unrelated websites can significantly damage your SEO efforts and lower your DA.

This is just one example of the many indicators that Moz or SEMrush use when determining your Domain Authority. Though Google doesn’t use the same system, it uses similar metrics to determine how expert, authoritative, and trustworthy (E-A-T) your site is.

What is Page Authority (PA)?

When you look up what is domain authority Moz for your website, you will also see your page authority. Page authority uses many of the same metrics used to determine your DA score, with one clear difference.

  • Domain authority scores your entire website.
  • Page authority scores a single page on your website.

While knowing what is a high domain authority, knowing your page authority matters as well. By understanding which pages are underperforming, you can work to increase their PA and, as a result, increase the DA of your entire site.

What is the Difference Between Page Authority and Domain Authority?

What is page authority and domain authority, and why are they different? To put it simply, page authority indicates how trustworthy and authoritative a single page on your website is, while domain authority helps you understand how trustworthy and authoritative your entire website is.

Typically speaking, you can have a higher DA score than PA score simply because there are some pages that won’t be linked to or talked about. Though you may feel like you need to have a PA score on every page, this isn’t strictly necessary.

Search Engine Algorithm Updates

Knowing what is domain authority of a website and the page authority can help you keep your SEO efforts on track. Of course, as every SEO expert knows, DA, PA, and ranking change almost constantly. With a good strategy, the changes are positive, but as Google and other search engines are constantly updating their algorithms, you should expect fluctuations.

To reflect these updates, Moz and other providers are also constantly updating their algorithms to ensure that your DA and PA are reflected accurately in light of the latest search engine algorithm updates. There can be more than one update a day, meaning that if you don’t keep a close eye on them, your DA could start to suffer.

What Should I Do to Improve my DA and PA?

It can be all too easy to get caught up in your domain authority and lose sight of what actually matters. The good news is that by investing in on-page and off-page SEO, your DA and PA should naturally increase. Using the best practices and natural techniques will always provide you the best results, not only in the present but also in the future.
